Our Story
Deshorupa — দেশরূপা, “the form of the nation” — exists to keep Bangladesh's handloom alive by making it part of everyday life again.
A craft at risk
In 1990 Bangladesh had more than ten lakh handloom weavers. By 2018, barely three lakh remained. A Tangail weaver can earn around ৳500 a day — less than half what a battery-rickshaw driver makes — and many young people are leaving the loom for good.
At the same time, machine-made “jamdani” is sold for a fraction of the price of the real thing, and imported lawn floods the market every Eid. Buyers who want authentic Bangladeshi craft are left guessing what is real.
Deshorupa sits between the two: genuine, verified handloom at honest, mid-market prices — with the weaver's story on every piece.
